In the age of technology, sustainability is becoming more feasible. While technology may still play a part in the problem of overconsumption and consumerism, with the following apps, we hope that allowing ourselves to become more conscious of our eco-actions will be a bit easier and perhaps more attainable!
1. OfferUp
Buy and sell everything from cars and trucks, electronics, furniture, and more. A C2C (consumer to consumer) marketplace with an emphasis on in-person transactions.
Price | free
Why it's great | We're all guilty of an overstuffed closet, spare bedroom, or garage. Instead of taking those items to the dump, try selling them to those close to you! More so, if you're looking for something but aren't wanting to spend the retail price, check to see if those near you are selling something identical or similar. It works well both ways!
2. PaperKarma
The stop junk mail app. A mobile app that automatically unsubscribes you from junk mail and unwanted catalogs. Opt-out from direct mailings and marketing distribution lists. Catalog choice is yours: simply snap a photo to take control of your mailbox.
Price | free (up to 4 requests)
Why it's great | Not only can you avoid the unnecessary conglomerate of junk mail each week, but you're also able to put an end to negative environmental impacts. Saves trees and helps the environment! Put an end to those unwanted "We miss you..." letters.
3. Too Good To Go
The world's number one app for food waste. Too Good To Go is a mobile application that connects customers to restaurants and stores that have unsold food surplus. This way, no food ever goes to waste. (It's sold at a discounted price, too!)
Price | free
Why it's great | Each year more than one-third of food produced in the world goes to waste. Using this app can be a small but helpful step in the right direction at minimizing that figure. While it is widely popular in Europe, there are still only a few places you're able to use this app within the United States. However, the more traffic the app gets, the higher chance there is of getting its availability in your area! Use it where you can.
4. Ecosia Search Engine
Ecosia uses the ad revenue from your searches to plant trees where they are needed the most. It donates 80% of its profit to nonprofit organizations that focus on reforestation. Plant trees with every search.
Price | free
Why it's great | Because Ecosia uses its profits to plant trees, every search with Ecosia actually removes about 0.5kg of CO2 from the atmosphere. Ecosia is an easy switch from Google --- they all do the same function, right?
