Do's and Don'ts of Composting

ranababublog

DO COMPOST

  • Fruits and vegetable scraps

  • Egg shells

  • Fresh and dry garden clippings (aside from diseased plants, grass, etc)

  • Old herbs

  • Coffee grounds/tea bags

  • Sawdust

  • Nutshells

  • Stale bread

  • Hair/fur/dryer lint

  • Fireplace ashes

  • Untreated straw

  • Shredded newspaper (black and white/non-glossy)

  • Plant stalks, twigs, and branches

  • Untreated woodchips and shavings

In short; DO COMPOST things that are not cooked, do not contain strong chemical dyes, and things that are considered "organic waste".

DONT COMPOST

  • Cooking oils (attracts animals and insects)

  • Diseased plants (may spread)

  • Heavily coated or printed paper (harsh chemicals)

  • Animal feces (health risk)

  • Milk products (attracts animals)

  • Meat products (attracts pests)

  • Weeds (will grow instead of decomposing)

  • Walnuts (contain a chemical that may inhibit some plants growth)

  • Coal or charcoal ashes

  • Highly acidic citrus fruit

  • Cooked foods

  • Used tissues or paper towels

  • Treated or painted wood

  • Bones

  • Stickers

  • Plastic materials

In short; DO NOT COMPOST things that are not considered "organic waste", anything that has been cooked or artifically treated. As well, do not throw any sort of diseased greenery into a compost pile as this will spread to whatever plant you put the compost on.
